S&P/TSX composite down in late-morning trading, U.S. stock markets also retreat

TORONTO —
Canada’s main stock index was down in late-morning trading as the telecommunication and financial sectors fell, while U.S. stock markets also moved lower.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 29.53 points at 20,675.74.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 150.99 points at 34,728.39. The S&P 500 index was down 10.66 points at 4,482.62, while the Nasdaq composite was down 6.10 points at 15,242.15.

The Canadian dollar traded for 79.11 cents US compared with 79.03 cents US on Thursday.

The October crude contract was up US$1.47 at US$69.61 per barrel and the October natural gas contract was down five cents at US$4.98 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was down US$4.40 at US$1,795.60 an ounce and the December copper contract was up 15 cents at US$4.43 a pound.
